In these sculptures, Noestheden generates two dimensional illustrations of star formations into three dimensional objects. The artist surrenders control of the design of the work as relative sizes and locations of component parts are laid out in the tiny diagrams. He regains control by revealing interpretive perceptions of the spatial relationships implied in the illustrations. Mapping the stars is an ancient practice that delivers its own contingencies of (un)predictability, error and (im)perfection while attempting to order nature. The artist relies on the initial camera recording, the illustrator's interpretation of the photograph, the accuracy of the publisher, the reliability of the photocopier and then the variables related to his own perceptions of the image at hand by translating the two dimensional model into three dimensional form.
These sculptures also function as scale models for large public sculpture.
